The book of Philippians is one of my favorite books in the Bible. It’s at the top of the list with I & II Timothy. I enjoy reading these three books as they all have somewhat the same theme: “serve Christ.”
Philippians became a part of my life in sixth grade. The church I was attending had a boy’s club that met every Thursday night. This club was based on the military. We wore BDUs and had ranks we could get promoted to. We were taught a lot of great things about being a man. We were taught how to talk to others, how to show respect, how to treat a lady, and much more.
To get promoted, you had to complete some physical exercises (pushups, sit-ups, running, etc.) and some spiritual exercises (Bible memory, Bible reading, etc.).
When you hit the rank of one star general, one of the tasks to be promoted was to memorize the book of Philippians. Well, I studied and memorized chapter 1 and quoted it that week. I started to memorize chapter 2 and was ready to quote it on Thursday night, and we went to a college hockey game. No problem, I’ll say two chapters the next week. Thursday arrives, and we end up playing football outside because it was the first nice week we had had in a while! So now I have to quote three chapters at once! Thursday comes around, and I quoted Philippians 2, 3, and 4 with only two helps. I studied and memorized and studied and memorized so much that week, I wasn’t going to let anything stop me.
Since then, I have always loved reading and studying Philippians. Now, I want to share, with you, some of the things I have learned from this book.
Over the next few weeks or until I get distracted with something else in the Scripture, I want to break down Philippians in how it’s spoken to me throughout the years, so come along with me on this journey!
