Slow Your Roll, Man

“He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.” (Proverbs 14:17)

“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.” (Proverbs 14:29)

The idiom “slow your roll” means to calm down, to slow down, relax, or reduce one’s intensity or excitement.

The Bible basically said this in different words long before it ever became an idiom in the American slang category.

He that is soon angry….”

“He that is hasty of spirit…”

Something I’ve had to learn the hard way, especially recently is to “slow my roll!”

When your emotions fluctuate up and down at the speed of a roller coaster, your actions tend to do the same, your words tend to do the same.

If you are soon angry, you deal or act foolishly. Umm, I’m raising my hand on that…that’s me.

If you are hasty in spirit or you have no control over your emotions, you exalt folly…or you will act or speak foolishly. That’s me again….I have to raise my hand.

Without realizing it, our emotions control or speech and our actions. That’s why it’s of the utmost importance to be in control of our emotions.

I think of the times in the Bible where we see the phrase “be sober.” Be serious minded, be in control of your mind, your emotions at all times.

So hey you, slow your roll, man! It’s not worth it! It’s not worth getting angry or losing your temper of even fluctuating quickly between happiness, sadness, anger, jealousy, bitterness and so on. It’s not worth losing control of your emotions, because you will eventually lose control of your actions and your speech and once those come out, you can never take them back.

Slow your roll, man! “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding.” Control your emotions and you will have a better understanding of the situation so that you will know how to act and speak!
