“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” (Proverbs 25:28)
Walls are an important part of our daily life. We don’t think much about them until they are gone. Walls provide protection, they set a boundary, they give you a defined space to be in.
We see in the verse above that it likes a man with no control over his emotions to city that has fallen apart and has no walls. We don’t see many cities with actual walls anymore but back in the Bible times, it was very common. It established a boundary of the city and was used to protect the citizens from the enemy that was without the walls.
If there were no walls around the city, anyone and everyone could come and go as they pleased. There were no boundaries, no safety, no protection.
The Bible likens one that cannot control his emotions or spirit as a city that is broken down and without walls. You don’t know what a person that cannot control his emotions is going to do. Any little thing can set them off. They have no boundaries or walls to their spirit, they can “fly off the handle” at any given moment.
This is something I have been working on emotionally, building walls. Not so I can become cold and heartless, but so I can control my emotions better to keep them in check. It’s alright to have emotions, it’s alright to show your feelings….its not alright to lose control, it’s not alright to speak your mind without no thought of how it will affect others
When you lose control of your emotions, you open yourself up to committing sin. Whether it’s harming someone, fulfilling lusts of the flesh, and more. Unchecked emotions will bring destruction.
Put some walls up in your life, around your emotions. Keep them in check. Protect yourself and protect others by controlling your emotions.
