Spiritual Pregnancy Cravings

Pregnancy cravings.

As a guy I have never had one, but I have benefitted from some of them. Like last week, my wife (who is pregnant) wanted a banana split. It was only 9:30 at night and we had no ingredients for a banana split. So I made my trip to the grocery store and got bananas, ice cream, syrup (4 different kinds),cherries, whipped cream and chocolate chips. By the time we ate our banana splits it was almost 10:30 but let me tell you, it was a good banana split.

Most of the pregnancy cravings that my wife has had, have been somewhat normal cravings and I have gotten some good food out of it. I did pass on the pizza stick and chocolate milk combo though, just didn’t sound good.

I got to thinking about these pregnancy cravings and how my wife acts when she gets them. She doesn’t go all crazy but she craves that food till she gets it. That’s all she wants at that moment. It is my job as a dutiful husband to help supply that craving.

Psalms 42:1-2 “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God.”

Does your soul thirst for God? Are you longing for Him?

Or are you satisfied with your Christian life? Are you content with the level of Christianity that you have reached?

As a Christian, we need to have a craving. A craving to be more Christ-like. A craving to be closer to God every day. A craving to serve God. A craving to be a light in this dark world. But many of us are satisfied with out level of Christianity. We are satisfied with how close (or how far) we are from God.

What are some lessons we can learn from pregnancy cravings that we can apply to being a Christian:

  1. The DESIRE that comes with a pregnancy craving is the same desire we need to have in the Christian life. It is a strong, intense desire for a specific food that nothing else will satisfy. A Christian needs a desire to be Christ-like. A desire to be a successful Christian. A desire to be the best servant of God possible. A desire that isn’t swayed by the money and the pleasures of this world. A desire that isn’t easily fulfilled by material things and circumstances.
  2. That pregnancy craving can be a desire that is left unfulfilled if nothing is DONE about it. Something has to be done to satisfy the craving; food has to be bought, banana splits have to be made, many things go into satisfying a craving. A spiritual craving is only satisfied when something is done about it. The Word of God needs to be read, talking to the Lord in prayer needs to be done, living a life that resembles the godly traits that are laid out for us in the Bible. A lot has to be done for any craving or desire to be filled.
  3. Lastly I see that everyday brings a new craving. Sometimes it is a strong craving, other days its just a normal craving but its a craving every day. In our Christian life, we need to crave everyday to be Christ-like. Have a DAILY craving to be Christ-like. Don’t just desire to be spiritual on Sunday or a couple days a week. Desire everyday to be closer to Christ.

Have a spiritual pregnancy craving. Let it only be satisfied by the things of God. Let it be a daily craving. In the end you will find that you are closer to God and living a happier Christian life.
