Imagination – the faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-6
The Bible speaks a lot about our thoughts and the things we should think about! What we think about is really who we are. One day those thoughts, if we allow them to go far enough, will become actions “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.” Proverbs 23:7 We are what we think we are.
Because we have so many thoughts everyday, the Bible gives us a list to judge our thoughts by. If we can think according to this list, we will have a great thought life that pleases and honours God. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8
Because we have so many thoughts, we need to bring every thought into captivity. Bring each thought into captivity to judge if it is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, good report, virtue, and if it brings praise. If your thoughts don’t fall into one of these categories, you probably shouldn’t be thinking it.
Capture your thoughts! Judge each thought against the Bible.
Control your thoughts! Keep the thoughts that pass the test and get rid of the rest.
Command your thoughts! Take the good thoughts and act on them to serve Christ.
