“Follow your heart.”
That phrase is such a popular quote and it is probably one of the worst pieces of advice to give! Now, I know some people are already like, what is this guy talking about?? Well let me explain…
Let’s start with a verse from the Bible (because the Bible is always a good place to start!), in Jeremiah 17:9 it says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
This verse tells us that our heart is deceitful, or heart has a tendency or disposition to deceive or give false impressions, our heart isn’t honest with us. The heart is so deceitful that the Bible says it is deceitful ABOVE ALL THINGS!!!
The verse goes on to describe the heart is desperately wicked or it is wicked by extreme measures. The heart is more wicked than we can fathom.
So please tell me why “Follow your heart” is good advice?
How can I follow my heart if it is deceitful above all things?
How can I follow my heart if it is desperately wicked?
We wouldn’t tell our children to go get advice and counsel from a serial killer sitting on death row. We wouldn’t tell our children to go get advice and counsel from a serial rapist, pedophile or someone that we think is desperately wicked. So why do we tell them to “Follow your heart,” like that is sound advice!
“Follow your heart!” PLEASE DON’T!! Your heart will deceive you into thinking you are doing the right thing and at the end is destruction! Your heart will base your decisions on emotion and feeling and what you feel is right. There will be no logic, there will be no reason, just feel good stuff.
So what do we follow then? Well, I am glad you asked.
FOLLOW THE BIBLE!!!!!
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.” Psalms 119:1-2
“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might no sin against thee.” Psalms 119:91-11
I say “Follow the Bible” before I say “Follow your heart.” The Bible is our guidebook for life, it is the map for the path that we should take. The Bible has never led anyone down the wrong path. The Bible has never failed anyone. The Bible will lead you the way you should go!
Because our heart is so wicked, the only way we have a chance in life is by trusting in the Lord with all your heart and not trusting in your own heart and your own understanding.
Because our heart is so wicked, we need to seek the Lord and His Word with our whole heart! When we seek Him with our whole heart, we are willing to do as He commands in His Word. Don’t tell me that you are seeking the Lord with your whole heart, when there are holes in your Christianity. If you seek Him with your whole heart, you will go soul winning, you will attend church, you will tithe, you will have a daily walk with Him, you will follow the standards that are laid out in the Bible….how much are you really seeking God?
Because our heart is so wicked, we need to hide the Word in our heart to help keep us from sinning against the Lord. When you have verses that you have memorized and tucked away in your heart and mind, they will pop up when that temptation pops up. Those verses will be there to help you do right and stay right!
So please don’t tell someone to “Follow your heart,” tell them to “Follow the Bible” instead, as it will take us the way we should go.
“Follow your heart!” PLEASE DON’T!!!!!
