“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
Hebrews 11:8-10
Abraham is the next character that we find in the Hall of Faith. He is actually listed in this chapter twice. Today, we are only going to look at the first occurence that he is mentioned.
When I read these verses, I make the comparison to that of today’s Christians. This whole chapter of people of faith have lessons that we can learn and use in our lives.
Abraham was called to leave everything he knew and go live in a strange country. Abraham obeyed, and went out. If you follow the life of Abraham, you will see that because of his faith and his obedience, God blessed him throughout his life.
We as Christians are living in a strange country. We are just passing through. We should be looking for that city whose builder and maker is God. To do this, it requires faith.
We are sojourning here in this world. We are temporary residents in this world. We are to be in this world, but not of this world. Abraham, lived in a strange country, but he stayed separated from the inhabitants in that he didn’t become one of them. There was always something different about Abraham.
As we dwell here in this strange country, we should dwell with those who have the same promise we do. I like what the Bible says, “dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.” When I read this verse, I think of church and the people in it. I think of the people that I know who have the same faith as I do, the same promise that I do.
Even though we are in a strange country, God has given us the church so that we can find motivation and encouragement to make it in this world. As a Christian, we should have that church family that we are a part of.
As we journey through this strange country, let us have faith as we look for that city which is built by God. Let us have faith to stay separated from this world. Let us be faithful to church so that we can be blessed and be a blessing to others.
