Lessons From LEGO

“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:10-15

In these verses, we see the importance of how we build our life. Paul is telling the people of Corinth to take heed or pay attention to what is built on the foundation of their life.

The first thing about building anything, you have to have a foundation or a starting point. The foundation for the Christian life is Jesus Christ. There is no other foundation but Christ. You have to have Him as your Saviour if you want to have a successful life. You can do all the things the Bible tells us to do but with Christ as your Saviour, you have no foundation and a weak life.

Whenever people say the word ‘build,’ I think of LEGO. Yes, I think of the building blocks. I love building LEGO sets! I love exploring the creativity of my mind when it comes to LEGO.

As I was reading the above verses, I thought about my experience with LEGO and some lessons that can be learned from them to use in our life.

Lesson 1: There is a process to reach the final product. What do I mean by this? To get the final product, you have to follow the instructions. You do not just open a box of LEGO and the model comes out completed already, you have to follow the process. The Christian life is a life where we are always following the process to get to the final product, to be like Christ. This is a lifelong process for the Christian! This leads right into the next lesson.

Lesson 2: Without the instructions, you will not reach the final product. Maybe on a little set you can get close and figure out how to put all the pieces together, but on a bigger set, you will have so many pieces and there may be some that you don’t even think go to the set! Without our instruction manual, the Bible, the Christian wouldn’t know what is needed to be done to become like Christ, to be holy like Him. We would be out here guessing and trying to do whatever we thought was best, it is a good thing that we have the King James Bible to instruct us in life.

Lesson 3: There is a specific order to the instructions. The instructions given in the LEGO set start at number 1. Then it ascends from there. When you are building the LEGO set, you have to build it in order of the instructions, if you go out of order, you will mess up and you will forget to add pieces. In the Christian life, there is a specific order that God has given us. It starts with salvation, then baptism, and then from there you have a walk with God, church attendance, tithing, spreading the Gospel and more. But if you don’t get the order correct, you will end up with a messed up life. It amazes me that many people, many Christians, know the order that God has given for different things in life, yet we do it our own way and then blame God for the mess we are in. Remember this, you can start over on a LEGO set if you mess up, but you cannot start over in life if you mess up!

Lesson 4: There are specific pieces to the LEGO model. How crazy would it be if LEGO just threw in a bunch of random pieces into the set. You would probably wonder where they go and if you were missing instructions for them. It would be confusing for the builder. Satan is out here, trying to throw extra pieces into our life as we build. He is trying to confuse us and distract us from reaching the finished product that God has for us.

There are many lessons that we can learn from a simple building toy like LEGO. If we follow the instructions and use the correct pieces, we will end up with the final, finished product.

In the Christian life, if we begin with the correct foundation and build upon that with materials of gold, silver and precious stones, then we will end up with a product that is pleasing to the Lord. Too many Christians choose to build upon their foundation with wood, hay and stubble and the Lord is disappointed with their life because it was a selfish life.

One day, we will stand before Christ and we will answer for what we did here on earth. Our life will be on display for everyone. What will your finished life look like? Will it be a mess with wrong pieces, missing pieces? Or will it be a life that is finished and brings honour and glory to God? It is your choice what you build upon the foundation of Christ. Whether you follow instructions or not, the pieces you use, it is your choice!
