Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about church attendance and why it is an important part of a healthy Christian life.
Notice, I didn’t say the most important part of a healthy Christian life. If I had to rank the things a Christian needs to do to be a healthy Christian, I would probably put church attendance somewhere between 4-6 on that list. (That would be an interesting blog to write, which I will do sometime!)
I believe church attendance is important and we can see that in the New Testament.
First thing we need to understand is who founded and created the church.
“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 16:18 KJV
“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”
Ephesians 2:19-22 KJV
Jesus Christ is the founder of the church. He is the chief cornerstone! Just like we believe the Bible is important because it’s God’s Word, we need to understand that church is important because Jesus Christ founded and started the first church.
The significance of the church in the New Testament is that the church and the temple of the Old Testament are two different establishments.
The Old Testament temple was a place for the Hebrew children to go to offer their sacrifices as an atonement for their sin.
The New Testament church is a place for born again believers to gather together to worship and serve the Lord Jesus Christ their Saviour.
Secondly, church attendance is important because it is an opportunity to be spiritually fed.
I firmly believe that as a Christian, we need to walk with God daily! We need to daily be fed from His Word and through prayer.
Church is like a restaurant in the sense that I’m going to be spiritually fed. I have spiritually eaten at my house during the week through my own devotions and now it’s time to go out and eat…at church.
If you are going to church and feel like you aren’t getting fed, there is two possible issues. First, always look at yourself. Did you go hungry for some spiritual food? Are you in a place spiritually to be fed? Don’t blame others for your lack of being fed at church, always look at yourself first. Secondly, and this is where people might have an issue, you may not be getting fed because the preacher isn’t bringing spiritual food to the table. Just like the person in the audience needs to be ready to eat, the preacher needs to be ready to serve the spiritual food. It works both ways.
Lastly, the reason why church attendance is important is because it provides good Christian fellowship.
The fellowship of the believers isn’t something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. After being in the world all week, you should enjoy going to a place where essentially everyone is like minded in that they want to please the Lord.
Attending church should be like an oasis in the desert. It should be a place that refreshes and recharges the Christian. Between the preaching and the fellowship and everything in between, church is important for the Christian.
You may be wondering how I could write a whole blog about “The Importance of Church Attendance” and not mention Hebrews 10:25. This verse is the go to verse for many on way church attendance should be a priority. While it is a great verse, it is not the end all, be all verse for church attendance. In the next blog, we will discuss this verse and what it means to church attendance!
