“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
Colossians 4:6 KJV
The way we talk to each other goes along ways. The tone of our voice, the words we say, our speech as a whole will either build someone up or tear someone down.
Seasoned with salt.
This phrase is pretty interesting. Why should my speech be seasoned with salt? I’m not a huge fan of salt, I like a little salt here and there but I’m not always reaching for it to season my food with, I’m more of a black pepper guy.
People use salt to season their foods for basically two reasons. One, to add flavor or to sweeten their food. Two, to cut down on the bitterness of the food.
If that doesn’t tell you why your speech should be seasoned with salt, then you are missing the point. Your speech should be sweet and without bitterness.
I have found that if I answer someone with speech seasoned with salt, I’m more likely to convince them of my point of view. If I answer someone without that salt, I’m more likely to push them away or turn them against me.
As Christians, our number one duty outside of our personal walk with God is to be a witness. If I learn how to speak with grace, I will be better equipped to tell others about God’s grace.
I’ve met so many Christians who would rather run people off than teach them and give them time to grow in the Lord. When I listen to these types of Christians, I can see that their speech is not with grace, not seasoned with salt.
I think of the story of Jesus when confronted with the woman who had committed adultery. The men who had brought her before Jesus had already condemned her, they wanted Jesus to condemn her also. But Jesus in His infinite wisdom, told them whoever hadn’t sin to cast the first stone. The men all left and it was just Jesus and the woman. In that moment, Jesus could have spoken to her and belittled her. He could have condemned her. He could have called her for all her sin. But He said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” Jesus gave her the ultimate chance to get right and live for Christ.
Whoever you talk to, wherever you go, have speech that is seasoned with salt!
