Empty Minded Christians

“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:17-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I have enjoyed reading through Paul’s Epistles. There is so much we can learn through these books from being a good Christian, to a good church member, to a good citizen, he covers it all!

As I was reading through Ephesians, chapter 4 really stood out to me. As Paul was writing to the church of Ephesus, he told them to walk not as other Gentiles did, in the vanity of their mind. That phrase ‘in the vanity of their mind’ is an interesting phrase.

When I think of the word vanity and what it means, the first definition I think of is empty. The Gentiles walk about in the emptiness of their mind. As a Christian, if our mind isn’t on Christ, it’s empty. If our mind isn’t on His work, it’s empty. If our mind is on our wants and our desires and the pleasures of this world, it’s empty.

Gentiles or unsaved people, have minds that aren’t focused on spiritual and eternal things, they are focused on temporal and selfish things. They are focused on things that are eternally empty. Many Christians, saved children of God, are empty minded! They are too worried about their career, making more money, buying cars and houses and stuff, they want fill their coffers down here on earth but leave their heavenly treasures empty, all because they are empty minded.

As I was looking into that word vanity, another definition I saw was morality. The Gentiles or unsaved walk in their own morality. Essentially, they do right in their own eyes. Many Christians, live life through the eyes of their own morality. They do not measure it up next to the Word of God. There are so many Christians who measure their morality against the world’s. They think they are better because they don’t do that or they don’t go there. They think they are a great Christian, but they fail to see that they fall short when measured with the Word of God.

“But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:20-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Whether you are empty minded and focused on earthly things or you try to be morally better than the rest of the world, Ephesians 4:23-24 tells us what we need to do be a better, biblical Christian. We need to have a renewing of the spirit of our mind. We have to refocus our mind to on the things of Christ!

So many Christians are focused on self, on fulfilling their own desires while still being morally right. They aren’t worried about the things of God or serving Him. They aren’t worried about reaching people for Christ. They are empty minded!

Don’t be an empty minded Christian!
