Have you ever asked yourself, “Why did I do that?” or “What was I thinking?”
Or have you said to yourself, “That was stupid, I shouldn’t have done that!”
I’m sure every one of us can say those things about different things we have done in life. We all make mistakes, we all mess up, and we all sin. And when we do something like that, those thoughts and questions go through our minds.
For example, I have been kicking myself the last couple days because of something I did a few months ago. What I did wasn’t anything wrong in any sense. I didn’t sin or violate any of God’s commands. I just made a stupid, impulsive decision.
No regrets. That’s what I keep telling myself about the decision I made. Regret means to feel sad or sorry about. I saw a statement on Wikipedia that I really liked, “Regret is the emotion of wishing one had made a different decision in the past, because the consequences of the decision were unfavorable. Regret is related to perceived opportunity.”
If I regret what I did, it is because I think my opportunity would be different now than what it is. Do I really know if I would be different now or would I have messed up elsewhere. I don’t know and at the end of the day, I can’t dwell on that!
I think Paul summed it up best in Philippians 3:13-14.
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:13-14 KJV
Paul had a past that he could have regretted and spent time feeling sorry about himself! He spent so much time hunting down and killing Christians. He enjoyed persecuting Christians! He had a life that he had every right to regret!
Paul says he is forgetting his past and reaching forth to that which is ahead. He is forgetting the life that he controlled and reaching forth to the life that the Lord is controlling! Paul didn’t have time to waste on regretting all the evil things he had done, he was trying to make best use of the time he had left to serve the Lord!
No regrets! Don’t let the past control your future! Reach forth to that which is ahead! Reach forth to that which the Lord wants you to accomplish!
