Chapter 4: Get Wisdom
This is probably one of my favorite chapters in Proverbs. It’s a simple yet profound chapter. It’s a chapter that gets straight to the point.
In the first section it tells you what you need to get in life and why you should get it. And we see in the second section that it gives a good description of the two paths you can take it life and what will happen depending on which one you choose.
I want to focus on the first section of this chapter though. The thing it tells us to get is wisdom. We see that phrase “get wisdom” twice in verses 5 and 7.
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7
I love this verse! It tells us that wisdom is the principal thing! The word principal here is used as an adjective which means main or most important. Wisdom is the most important thing that we can have in life. Wisdom is what will guide us, it is what will help us choose which path to take.
I like how Solomon tells us his son that wisdom is the most important thing and then he tells him ‘get wisdom.’ Each one of us needs to ‘get wisdom!’ Where do we get wisdom? We get it from the Word of God and a relationship with God!
This world has many, many smart people! Just look at the technology that we have and can use. But this world is lacking wise people. There is a difference between being smart and being wise. God wants His children to be wise.
Get wisdom! Go to the Lord everyday asking Him to give you wisdom. Don’t just ask for wisdom but ask for the knowledge to use that wisdom.
