Chapter 6: The Light of the Word
This chapter has a few different topics that we could discuss. It covers being a good friend and a good worker. It also talks about the characteristics of a wicked man. It covers the things that the Lord hates and what the Lord says is an abomination unto Him. It also talks about the strange woman, her characteristics and what will happen if you get caught up in the mess of a strange woman.
The verse I want to look at today is Proverbs 6:23 “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:” When I read this verse I automatically think of Psalms 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Solomon knew what his son needed to guide him through his life and that was the commandment and the law, what we know today as the Bible. Solomon gave his son the same instruction that his father, David, had given him in Psalms 119:105. (It is widely believed that David wrote Psalms 119 as it follows the course of his other writings.) What great instruction was passed down in that family. They all had their faults but they knew that the Word of God is what would be able to guide them on the path of life.
We need the light of the Word in this dark world. How do you expect to make it in the Christian life without the Word of God to guide you? Everyday we need to get in the Bible and find something that will help us along the path of life that day.
The end of Proverbs 6:23 is interesting also, “…and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:” When I read this, I think of having to learn lessons of life the hard way. The word reproof means disapproval. I can see Solomon telling his son that he may have to reprove and rebuke him for messing up but that he would give him the instruction needed to not make the same mistake again. This is the way you have to learn sometimes. Don’t get mad when you get in trouble, take the lesson you learned from your mistake and use it to be a better person and Christian.
Take the Word of God without you through the day to guide and lead you on the path of life!
