The Bible has many different names for Christ and many different attributes. He is the Great Physician, He is the Good Shepherd, He is Alpha and Omega, and many more!
Have you ever thought about the attributes given in the Bible for a Christian. We are to be a soldier, we are to be a servant, and we are a son or daughter in Christ. Among the many attributes given to a Christian, we are supposed to be a light.
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
Christ here is telling His disciples that they are the light of the world. We, as Christians, need to be a light in this dark world. We have Jesus Christ in us, there should be no excuse why we aren’t shining bright for Christ.
We have everything we need to be a bright light for Christ to those around us, yet I see so many dimly lit Christians.
Reasons why so many Christians have dim lights:
- Lack of Salvation – There are so many Christians out there whose light is so dim, you can barely tell if they are even on, if they have Christ as their Saviour. Yes I know, you aren’t saved by your works, but a good indication of being saved is your works. When you are truly saved, you will want to serve the Lord, you will change your actions! People around you will be able to see a difference, see that light of Jesus Christ in you.
- Love of Self – There are also those who are saved and they are dimly lit because they lost their first love. They lost the love they felt for Christ when He first saved them. They love themselves more than they love Christ.
- Lingering Sin – If you let sin dwell in your life, it will dim your light for Christ. Sin is like that bushel, it will cover that light so that no one can see it. Ask for forgiveness and confess and repent from your sin.
Don’t let these things dim your light for Christ! He needs Christians who are a bright light in this dark world.

I had never considered the idea of “dimly lit Christians”, but it leads us all to examine how bright our light is shining for Christ.
