What Are You Doing With Your Time?

“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:1

“Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.” Colossians 4:5

Time.

The most valuable commodity yet the most wasted.

The thing about time is that once you spend it, it is gone.

Think about all the minutes you have spent doing useless and needless things. Think about all the minutes that you have spent doing right and doing wrong. Think about all the minutes you have spent serving others and serving yourself.

Everyone you know demands some of your time. I was thinking about this earlier today and in my own life, I came up with a list of people that demand my time.

  • The Lord
  • My wife
  • My two girls
  • My employer
  • My employees
  • My blogging community
  • My bus kids
  • The people over ministries I am involved in at church
  • And I even demand time for myself

Everything we do is based on time. Everyone we interact with gets some of our time.

That is why time is the most valuable commodity that we own. We are concerned with how we earn money, how we spend our money, how we invest our money, and how we save our money. But how concerned are we with our use of time.

How to earn time.

We don’t know how much time we have here on earth, only God does. He does say that our life is but a vapor. In the span of eternity, we are only here for a little time. So how can we earn time? How can we extend our life if God has already told us it is going to be short?

“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” Ephesians 6:2-3

“My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.” Proverbs 3:1-2

Our life isn’t guaranteed. The time we have isn’t guaranteed. But God does tell us that if we honour our parents, we could live long on the earth. He also tells us to keep his commandments and if we do, we will have length of days and long life. God has a plan for each one of our lives and as long as we are following His plan, He will bless us and one of those blessings may be long life.

How to spend time.

We should spend our time on others. Loving others. Helping others. Serving others. Whatever we do should be for others! If you look at the life of Christ, everything He did was for others. He was always helping someone, serving someone. I am not opposed to spending a little time on yourself but if you spend all your time on yourself than you are for sure wasting your time. As a husband, I have to spend time with my wife. As a father, I have to spend time with my children. It is something I have to work on constantly. We all spend our time on something, don’t waste it on things that don’t matter.

How to invest time.

I was thinking about how to invest time. When you invest money, you expect a return on that investment. When you spend time with those who matter, you are investing in their lives. When I spend time, invest time, into my marriage, my marriage will grow stronger and better. If spend and invest time into my children, the chances of them turning out right and serving the Lord will be greater. What we have to realize is that even if you invest into something, you may not always get the return you expected. Invest wisely and God will bless your investment.

How to save time.

The best way to save time is not to spend time on worthless things. When we spend time on worthless things, wrong things, then we are wasting time. That is time lost, that we can never use again because we wasted it. Think about all those minutes you can save by doing right, by living right, by spending your time right.

So as you go about your day, think about what you are doing and how you are spending your time. Are you investing it wisely or wasting it?
