While I was working last night, I came up with a list of 4 things that would show spiritual growth in a Christian. I spent some time thinking about what I should title this blog and as you can see, I chose “4 ‘New’ Things For The New Year.”
These 4 things should be evident after one gets saved. These 4 things should be a sign of spiritual growth. These 4 things should be something that we all need to reevaluate and see where we are at in our life compared to Christ.
We should base our Christianity on how close we are to Christ, not how far away from the world we are or how much better we are then the next Christian. Too often, we are worried about how we compare to the next person, rather than how we compare to Christ. These 4 things will help you change how you compare yourself with Christ. After all, our ultimate goal is to be like Christ, so that is who we should be comparing our Christianity to.
Let’s get into these 4 things that we can use in our life this year!
- New Life – As I was thinking about this, I thought that this could go a few different ways with all the same outcome. When you get saved, you have a new life in Christ. When you are saved but leave for the world and then you come back to Christ, it is new life. Then as I was thinking that at the beginning of the year, there is a newness, a freshness to everything, there is new life in goals and in resolutions. Whatever stage this applies to you in, it will not hurt to find new life in Christ and renew those things that you once had through Him. “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:” Ephesians 2:1-2 Here we see that God hath quickened or made us alive. Why? Because we were dead in our trespasses and sins. If we are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, we have no reason, no excuse to still be living in the death and decay of this world! We should be alive with the joy of the Lord, with the power of the Lord! Christians should be the most vibrant, excited people in the world, because we were made alive through Christ! Find that life this year, be excited about you can do for God this year!
- New Look – “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2 You may be wondering where I get a ‘New Look’ from this verse. First I see is the outward look, be not conformed to this world. We shouldn’t look like, talk like or act like the world. Next I see the inward look, the renewing of your mind. We need to change our mindset on how we do things. Everything should be done to bring honor and glory to God. Third I see the upward look, that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. If we get a new look for this year, our outward look will change to please God. Our inward look will become fresh and clean and pleasing to God. Our upward look will help us live and serve in the will of God.
- New Labour – “Let all things be done decently and in order.” I Corinthians 14:40 How is my labour for Christ? If it isn’t the number one thing, the most important thing, if our labour for Christ isn’t preeminent then we are labouring all wrong. We need to get a new view on our labour, whether spiritual or secular and put it in order with our labour for Christ being first. Whether you are a new Christian or an old, seasoned Christian, now is a good time of year to evaluate your service for Christ. The biggest thing that we can do for Christ is be a witness. I know a couple daily soul winners who have seen people saved for everyday for many years now, they realized the most important work in life was to witness. One of my goals this year is to pass out at least one tract every single day! So far, I haven’t failed. It takes thought and effort to make it happen. I want my labour for Christ to be the most important thing in my life!
- New Love – “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” I John 2:15 No matter who we are or where we are at in life, we need to stop and ask ourselves, do we love the world more than we love God? Remember, when you answer this that actions do speak louder than words. Do we have the love of God in us? Do we exhibit the love of God to those around us? The Bible clearly states that if we love the world and the things of the world, then we do not have the love of God. Maybe it is time that you renew the love you had for God and the things of God. Start this year off with loving God more than the world!
No matter where you are at in your spiritual life, we can use the start of the New Year to get us back to the newness we had when we were said. Found that life again! Get your look focused on God. Turn from loving the world to loving the Father. Use this start of the New Year to start new again in your Christian life!
