How To Behave In Church – Lesson 2

“But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” I Timothy 3:15

Behave – to manage the actions of oneself in a particular way; to conduct oneself in a proper manner.

As we start going through the list of behaviors that we should have in our life as a Christian, when it comes to the house of God, I want you to ask yourself if you display these behaviors. When I was looking at this list I have, I had to ask myself if I needed to improve in any of these areas. To be honest, I could use improvement in every area and most Christians probably could because we never reach a point of perfection in our Christian life.

BE FAITHFUL

The first behavior we need to have in the house of God is that of faithfulness.

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25

Faithful: steadfast in affection or allegiance; firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty

Forsaking: to renounce or turn away from entirely

Assembling: to bring together (as in a particular place or for a particular purpose); to fit together the parts of; to meet together

Exhorting: to incite by argument or advice; to give warnings or advice; to make urgent appeals

As I start this lesson, I want to say that I understand that there are times when you are sick or your child is sick or an emergency happens and you can not make it to church. These are not the times that I am talking about today. I am talking about and referencing the times we purposely choose to miss church.

When we choose to miss church, we are forsaking church. We are saying that it isn’t important and that we don’t need it. Sounds harsh, right? I find it interesting and convicting that God uses the word forsaking, He was emphasizing how much church attendance means to Him.

When we forsake church, we are renouncing church and we are turning away from church. This isn’t an immediate result but over time, the more you forsake church, you will end up totally out of church. You have to choose whether you want to be faithful to church or to forsake church.

The Bible also tells us to exhort one another, to make urgent appeals to one another to be at church. We think that we are being rude and overbearing when we keep inviting and asking the same person over and over to be at church. Well we aren’t, we are just exhorting like the Bible says. It also tells us to do it more and more as the day approaches, the day of Christ’s return.

Why is it important to be at church?

  • Because Christ gave Himself for the church. “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;” Ephesians 5:25 If Christ found the church so important that He gave Himself for it, the least we could do is show up when there is church going on. Christ didn’t give Himself for that football game or that family outing on the lake. Whatever you have going on during church time is not more important than church itself.
  • Because Christ placed you in your church. “But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him.” I Corinthians 12:18 God has placed you in the church you belong to for a specific reason. You are a part of that church body. When you miss church, you are letting part of the body of Christ down. If we think of ourselves as members of the body of Christ, we may make more of an effort to be at church every service. God has placed you in your church, and He has a function for you to do in that church, no matter what it is.

If you are ever going to have good behavior at church, you must learn to be faithful. Show up, be on time, enjoy church and enjoy being part of the body Christ has placed you in.
