How’s Your Temple Doing?

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6:19-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

These verses have been on my mind the last couple of weeks. Through different conversations with different people, these verses have come up.

It is definitely interesting to see how different people take these verses and make application to their life from it. Today, I’m going to share what God has laid on my heart in reference to applying these verses to my life.

To briefly introduce this topic, I think about the temple in the Old Testament and what it was used for. From the temple that traveled through the wilderness to the temple that Solomon built, it had one main purpose, to offer sacrifice to God. This temple was were God dwelt. It was to place to go to for sacrifice and service to God.

When Jesus died on the cross, the temple veil was rent in two giving us access to the throne of God. We do not need a priest or a go between to talk to God. We have free and unlimited access to God whenever and wherever we want!

Paul is telling the church of Corinth that our bodies are now the temple of God once we have been saved. He states “For ye are bought with a price…” Paul was telling the Corinthians that they were no longer their own, they were now God’s so start acting like it!

Same goes for us as Christians today, we are no longer our own. Our bodies aren’t our own once we are saved, we are now Christ’s.

Once we become saved, we become the temple of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit lives inside us. So the question that each one of us need to ask ourselves is ‘How is my temple?’ Is it a comfortable, clean dwelling place for the Holy Spirit or is a place of chaos and carnality?

One thing that has stood out in these verses is the last statement, “…therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit…” Not only our spiritual life needs to bring glory to God but also our physical life.

I have been convicted about what I’m putting into my body. I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke, I don’t so drugs…but I drink soda, energy drinks, eat fast food, and more. Just like the first three things have harmful effects on my body, so do the latter items. I have to eat better, I have to be more conscious about what I put into my body! I believe God wants us to live a healthy life, I’m not saying that we won’t go through illness and disease but we need to do our part in being healthy.

Physically and spiritually, we need to be careful what we consume on a regular basis. Is it healthy physically? Is it helpful spiritually?

Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. Take care of it. Do your best to make it a temple worth service to the Lord.
