Pathway Through Proverbs: Chapter 16

Chapter 16: Pride

“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16:5, 18-19‬

Pride started with Lucifer when he decided that he wanted to be higher than God. God cast Lucifer out of Heaven because He hates pride. Since then, man has struggled with pride. Pride in thinking that we are better than others, pride in thinking that we above destruction and basically become so prideful that we set ourselves up as a god.

In verse 5, we find that the Lord finds pride as an abomination. The Lord hates pride. He despises pride. Pride makes him sick to His stomach. We all know sin is wrong, but why would you do the one that God absolutely hates?

In verse 18, we see that pride goeth before destruction. Pride brings destruction. Lucifer is the best example of that. He went from having everything to having nothing. He went from a life full of delight in the presence of God to a life full of destruction that one day will end up in that eternal fire.

Don’t start down that road of pride. It is a hasty road to destruction. As we see in verse 19, it is better to be of a humble spirit, God states in Matthew 19:30 “But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.” God will take care of the humble, it may seem like the proud people get all the attention and accolades but their time is coming. The humble aren’t worried about anything except doing what they are supposed to do, being where they are supposed to be, and living how they are supposed to live. God will bless the humble.

It is easy to be proud but don’t fall into that trap. Do your best to stay humble.
