Pathway Through Proverbs: Chapter 19

Chapter 19: The Right Way to be Selfish

Everyone to some extent loves themselves. We all have a selfish nature in us. Some people are able to keep it in check while others let it run their life. There are those selfish people out there that do everything for their own good and well-being and do not care for anyone else. They are the ones that constantly hurt those around them, not caring how it affects their family and friends. This world is full of selfish people. Each one of us needs to do our best to stop living for self and start living for others.

With that being said, let us look at verse eight. This verse says, “He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.” I read this verse and my first thought was, “Hey, I can be selfish and it is alright.” The Lord is saying that if you truly love your own soul, you will get wisdom. It is alright to be selfish if I am gaining wisdom.

If we are going to be selfish, lets make sure it is about the right thing and that is wisdom. Money, fame, and other things cause people to be selfish but this selfishness is a sin. Each one of us should strive to not be a selfish person like this.

So if you are selfish, get wisdom! Then use that wisdom to help others and lift others up and live a truly selfless life.
