“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:1-2
The first phrase in the chapter, “If ye then be risen with Christ…” refers to those who are saved, the Christians. Paul is directing this passage to a certain group of people. He is giving them an outline for their Christian life.
- Seek Those Things Above. After Paul directs the chapter to Christians, he tell them to seek those things which are above. That statement is still need today. We live in a materialistic minded world where we seek fortune and fame, we seek prosperity and popularity. Even Christians fall into this trap of seeking for things here below so we can fit in with those around us. The world is searching for money and materialistic things, they are seek for those things which give them instant satisfaction and gratification. As a Christian, we need to seek Christ and those things that are from above.
- Set Your Affection On Things Above. Once you find what you are seeking, set your affection on it, desire it, want it! If you go seeking for earthly, worldly things, more than likely your affection will be set on those things. Once your affection is set, your attitude becomes centered on that thing and your actions are geared to gaining that thing. Like I said in my post yesterday, “Your affections affect your attitude and actions.” What you desire and think about on a constant basis will soon come out in your attitude and actions. We have to seek the right things and we have to set our affection on right things. When you set your affections on the things of Christ, you will draw nearer to Him and you will not be as attracted to the things of this world. The things of this world will lose their pull on you as you get closer to Christ.
- Serve Christ. “Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” If you seek the things of Christ and you set your affections on the things of Christ, it is safe to say that you will serve Christ. Serving Christ is the evidence of seeking Him and setting your affection on the things of Christ. You can’t effectively serve Christ with seeking Him. You can’t effectively serve Christ with being set on the things of Christ. The Christian life is a life of building blocks and it all starts with your faith (salvation) in Christ and than your relationship with Him.
Paul told the church at Colosse that if they do these things, they have the reward of the inheritance of the Lord waiting for them. Whatever reward I can get from Christ is far greater than anything the world can give me. Choose today, to seek Him, to set your affection on Him and to serve Him.
