Being A Confident Christian

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

Philippians 1:6

Last night, my wife and I were talking about the subject of being confident and what it means when it comes to serving the Lord. Then today, this verse shows up as the verse of the day and I got to thinking some more about the subject of being confident.

God has call each one of us to a good work. He has something that He wants each one of us to fulfill and accomplish in our lives. Paul is telling us that if we have been called, we can be confident in knowing that God will help us carry out that work.

I have a few areas that I believe that we should be confident in, and have confidence in Christ that He will help us in these areas.

The first is Salvation. I am confident in Christ that He will save me if I put my faith and trust in Him. When I accepted Christ as my Saviour, I was unsure about His power and ability to save me. I had complete and total confidence in His Word that what He said He would do, He would do! We can have confidence in salvation through Jesus Christ!

Next we can have confidence in our Soul winning. We can have confidence in telling others about the saving power of Jesus Christ! It worked for us, why won’t it work for someone else. Telling other people about Jesus Christ and how He alone can save them is the number responsibility of every single Christian! There is no need to be scared or intimidated by the world, being a witness is a good work, and we are to be confident in what we are called to do!

We can have confidence in our Service. I like to think that being a soul winner and being a servant are two different aspects of the Christian life, yet we are called to do both. If God has called you to serve in some area of church, and I believe there is a place for everyone, you can have confidence that God will help you in that service, in that good work. Too many Christians sit idly by for whatever reasons, but I think one of the big reasons is they lack confidence. We have to realize that whatever God has called us to do, He has equipped us to perform that good work, and we can find confidence in Him.

Then lastly, our Standards are something we can take confidence in. I look around and I see a lot of Christians giving in to worldly fashion and worldly living. They have lost confidence in the standards that God has given to us in His Word. We are called to look different, be different, act different and talk different than the worldly crowd. When I see Christians that are dropping their standards, I see people that have lost confidence in God and what He can do if they live according to His Word. Be peculiar, be confident in being different!

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you are doing, you can find confidence in Christ to fulfill His will for your life!

Let Others Praise You

“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.”

Proverbs 27:1-2

We live in a selfish society. If you look around, everything is about what can I get or what can I do for myself or how do I look. We live in a time where everyone is pointing out their own accomplishments and bringing praise and recognition to themselves, especially through social media.

We all can think of that one person, who always has a better story or is always praising themselves. And we can all agree, that person gets on our nerves, yet we still try to be friendly. If you can’t think of someone like this, it is probably you….

The Bible, especially Proverbs, talks much about pride and the sin of pridefulness. When someone is bringing praise to themself, they are disobeying what the Word of God has to say about receiving praise.

People who are constantly bringing praise to themselves, are trying to build themselves up and look good in the eyes of their peers and really anyone who will notice. They aren’t concerned about how or what they are doing, they are more concerned whether or not people are noticing.

We, as Christians, should be more concerned about what we are doing and the effort we are putting into what we are doing, whether it is or secular job or our spiritual job for Christ. If we do what we are supposed to do, praise and recognition will come. What I have I learned in my short life is this, “Someone is always watching what you do.” That is a simple thought if you really think about it. Yes, we know, God is watching everything you do. There is no private, hiding place from God. But in this day and age, while out in public, someone is always watching what you do. With that being said, do what you are supposed to do, and put your best effort into what you do, and you will get that praise and recognition.

So the thought for the day is this, “Don’t worry about letting people know what you are doing, only focus on doing what you should be doing!”

3 Steps From Colossians 3

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:1-2

The first phrase in the chapter, “If ye then be risen with Christ…” refers to those who are saved, the Christians. Paul is directing this passage to a certain group of people. He is giving them an outline for their Christian life.

  1. Seek Those Things Above. After Paul directs the chapter to Christians, he tell them to seek those things which are above. That statement is still need today. We live in a materialistic minded world where we seek fortune and fame, we seek prosperity and popularity. Even Christians fall into this trap of seeking for things here below so we can fit in with those around us. The world is searching for money and materialistic things, they are seek for those things which give them instant satisfaction and gratification. As a Christian, we need to seek Christ and those things that are from above.
  2. Set Your Affection On Things Above. Once you find what you are seeking, set your affection on it, desire it, want it! If you go seeking for earthly, worldly things, more than likely your affection will be set on those things. Once your affection is set, your attitude becomes centered on that thing and your actions are geared to gaining that thing. Like I said in my post yesterday, “Your affections affect your attitude and actions.” What you desire and think about on a constant basis will soon come out in your attitude and actions. We have to seek the right things and we have to set our affection on right things. When you set your affections on the things of Christ, you will draw nearer to Him and you will not be as attracted to the things of this world. The things of this world will lose their pull on you as you get closer to Christ.
  3. Serve Christ. “Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” If you seek the things of Christ and you set your affections on the things of Christ, it is safe to say that you will serve Christ. Serving Christ is the evidence of seeking Him and setting your affection on the things of Christ. You can’t effectively serve Christ with seeking Him. You can’t effectively serve Christ with being set on the things of Christ. The Christian life is a life of building blocks and it all starts with your faith (salvation) in Christ and than your relationship with Him.

Paul told the church at Colosse that if they do these things, they have the reward of the inheritance of the Lord waiting for them. Whatever reward I can get from Christ is far greater than anything the world can give me. Choose today, to seek Him, to set your affection on Him and to serve Him.
