Solomon’s Lesson On Wisdom

I was reading through Proverbs 9 during my devotions yesterday and a verse stuck out to me. As I have said before, Proverbs was written by Solomon to his son. Solomon was the wisest man to walk the earth (besides Christ.) In Proverbs, wisdom is spoken of quite a bit. Because Solomon was the wisest man and God used him to write parts of the BIble, I think we should pay attention whenever Solomon talks about wisdom.

Solomon stressed the importance of wisdom to his son, throughout the book of Proverbs. He told his son everything he knew about being wise and how to get wisdom. Let’s look at 3 things about wisdom that Solomon tells his son.

  1. Wisdom is the PRINCIPAL thing. “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7 Principal means most important or influential. Solomon is telling his son that more than anything in the world that he get, wisdom is the most important! After he tells his son that wisdom is the most important thing to have, he simply says “get wisdom.” Solomon, in the previous verses, had already told his son how to get wisdom. In Proverbs 4:1-4, he tells his son 3 things on how to get wisdom. First he says you have to listen. “Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.” vs. 1 You have to listen to people wiser than you if you ever want to get wisdom. You will never start on the path to wisdom if you are talking when those wiser than you are talking. The next thing he tells his son is to learn. “He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words…” vs. 4 It does no good to just listen though, you have to learn what you are being told. You have to retain what you are hearing. Then the last thing we see from Solomon on how to get wisdom is found at the end of vs. 4, “…keep my commandments, and live.” You have to live what you learned from listening. More important than money or fame or a nice house or a nice car is wisdom. Wisdom is the principal thing, get wisdom!
  2. Wisdom is PRICELESS. “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Proverbs 8:11 Solomon told his son that wisdom is priceless. Anything that you desire, wisdom is worth more. It is better than rubies. It is better than any precious jewels. Gold and silver have nothing on wisdom. WIsdom is priceless. Yet so many treat it like it is worthless. I actually asked my wife the question of “What is the difference between priceless and worthless?” this past weekend. At the core of the these two words is the simple fact there is no worth to it, there is no price that you would put on something. It is all a matter of perspective whether you think something is priceless or worthless. If you think wisdom is priceless, you will do whatever you can to get it and to keep it. If you think wisdom is worthless, you will let it pass by and choose to take the foolish path in life.
  3. Wisdom is PERSONAL. Here is where a verse from Proverbs 9 jumped off the page. In verse 12 of Proverbs 9 it says, “If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.” When it comes down to it, wisdom is personal. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. That means you can’t be wise of your daddy’s or your mommy’s wisdom. You can’t be wise off the wisdom of your preacher or your teacher. The only wisdom you can have is the wisdom you can get. The son of Solomon had a father who was the wisest man in the world, yet, the son had to decide if he wanted wisdom himself. Make wisdom personal in your own life and the way to do that is make it the principal thing in your life and the most priceless thing in your life. If you can do those things, than wisdom will be yours.

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have been through, you can have wisdom. Listen to those who are wiser than you, learn from them, and then take what you learn and live it.

  1. Caleb,Hope you don’t mind me sharing this….my recent study on this very topic! Keep it up!

HAPPINESS IS FOUND IN HEAVENLY WISDOM

Proverbs 3:  13  Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
    WHY?
14  For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15  She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16  Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17  Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18  She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

NO WONDER THERE ARE SO MANY UNHAPPY PEOPLE, INCLUDING CHRISTIANS

    Heavenly wisdom defined;
    Proverbs 4:7
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Principal – Most important, highly regarded, that thing above everything else that we should, want, crave, have

Look what all comes with gaining and excersising wisdom…

5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

0.PRESERVATION (in tough times and situations)
6  Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

0.UNDERSTANDING/KNOWLEDGE (heavenly discernment, comprehension and interpretation )
7  † Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

0.PROMOTION AND HONOUR (people will look up to you, want to pattern lives after you)
8  Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

0.GRACEFULNESS AND GLORY (a visible compassion and presence of strength)
9  She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

    What heavenly wisdom looks like;
Proverbs 9:1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

(Have 7 seniors stand to be pillars)
How they build new buildings in Germany

Now let me show you something awesome!! Let me reveal to you the 7 pillars of heavenly wisdom….

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

    1. Heavenly wisdom is PURE
it is free from iniquity and defilements, without sinful connotations, and is studious of holiness both in heart and life.

    2. Heavenly wisdom is PEACEABLE
Those who are truly wise do what they can to preserve peace, that it may not be broken; and to make peace, that where it is lost it may be restored, in families, in churches, in all societies, HEAVENLY wisdom makes men peaceable.

    3. Heavenly wisdom is GENTLE
not being disjointed about opinions, NOT urging our own above others. not being rude and overbearing in conversation, nor harsh and cruel in temper, or words. Gentleness should be opposed to all these.

0.Heavenly wisdom is EASY TO BE ENTREATED, in other words it is very persuadable, willing ears will listen to and convert to what is good or from what is evil.

    5. Heavenly wisdom is FULL OF MERCY AND GOOD FRUITS
always open to every thing that is kind and good, both to respond in forgiveness and to forgive those who offend, whenever the occasion arises.

    6. Heavenly wisdom is WITHOUT PARTIALITY
The original word, adiakritos, means to be without suspicion, or free from judging, in our conduct towards one person more than another, nor censuring others purely on account of their differing from us.

    7. Heavenly wisdom, which is from above is WITHOUT HYPOCRISY
It has no disguises nor deceits, but it is sincere and open, always to every man.

O that you and I may always be guided by such wisdom as this, wisdom that comes from above! A heavenly, Godly, Holy Spirit guided wisdom! AMEN!!

When it’s all said in done WISDOM SAYS
    “DO
    IT
    GODS
    WAY”
    EVERY
    TIME!

Now, How do we get it?
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, ( I’ll be the first to tell you that I do)
let him ask of God, ( not the secular college professor, not the encyclopedia britanicca….GOD)
that giveth(does not hold back from)
to all (some, a few, only the pastor? NO….ALL/ANY)
    men liberally,(freely and abundantly)
and upbraideth not;( isn’t irritated or bothered by our asking for)
and it shall be given him.(a promise!)

Have you prayed for wisdom lately?
