The ‘Nots’ Of Proverbs 1

“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:”

Proverbs 1:8

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”
Proverbs 1:10

“My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:”

Proverbs 1:15

Proverbs is a book where the father is writing to the son. He is writing to the son and giving him instruction on how to life live and how to get the most of life. I see in this book, a father who loves his son enough to spend time to teach him how to make decisions, how to act and how to live life fully and be blessed of the Lord.

Now that I am a father, I have to teach and train my children how to live life, how to make decisions and all the other things that come with life. If I don’t teach my children, someone or something else will. If I want my children to learn what I want them to learn and act the way that I want to act then I am going to have to put time and effort into them.

We see here in Proverbs 1, that Solomon was teaching his son about ‘nots.’ He told him three ‘nots’ that he should have in everyday life.

We use knots on a regular basis without even thinking about. If you wear shoes with laces, you tie them in a knot to keep your shoe tight so that it doesn’t fall off your foot.

There are many different types of knots. When I was thinking about this truth, I didn’t realize how many knots there are. It makes sense though, some are stronger than others. Some knots can only be used for certain things and tasks. Whatever the need, I am sure there is a knot for it.

In life, we need to have different ‘nots.’ One ‘not’ isn’t going to be needed for all the issues we face in life. As I was looking at the list of knots, I realized that I didn’t know a lot of them. If I wanted to learn them, I’m sure I could learn by trial and error, but the best way to learn is have someone teach me about them. The ‘nots’ we need to know for life are best learned through teaching and not through experience.

We need a variety of ‘nots’ to make it through life. We need to learn how to use each one efficiently and also know when and how to use it.

Over the next few days, I am going to talk about some ‘nots’ we need to have in our life that we can learn from this first chapter in Proverbs.
