When the word profit is used, we automatically think of money. How much money are we profiting from our actions in life? From our jobs, side hustles and whatever else we got going on, how much money are we bring in? That is the profit we think of.
Trust me, I am not going to give you a money-making scheme today, because that is not what this blog is about, nor do I have a money-making scheme to share. Today, I want to share with you, how you can become more profitable in your Christian life.
I was reading my Bible yesterday and I saw a verse in Job that stuck out to me and I have been thinking about it this past day. This verse is where I got today’s topic from.
“Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself.”
Job 22:2
I have been pondering that question, “Can a man be profitable unto God?”
I believe the answer to this is yes.
One of the meanings of the word profitable is beneficial, useful. Can a man be found beneficial or useful unto God? I believe the answer is yes, why would we be here if we couldn’t?
How can we build or usefulness towards God? Does God benefit from having us here on earth? What can we do to be profitable to God?
The first part of this verse is a question, the second part is a statement. “…as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself.” In the secular field, everyone is concerned about their profit. How can they be profitable to themselves? The people who wise in their work, in their money, in who they associate with, those are the ones who are profitable to themselves.
Whether we are profitable or not to ourselves shouldn’t be our main concern while here on earth. We need to be more concerned about being profitable to God and for God.
While I was thinking about this, I got to thinking that the Christian life can be summed up into 3 areas, no matter the topic. Your walk, your work and your worship are all vital to the Christian life. If you are lacking in one, you are not fulfilling the Christian life as God wants you to.
First technique in being profitable for God is you have realize that God has a purpose for you and that He wants to use you. “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” II Timothy 1:9 You will never be profitable for God, until you realize that you are a saved child of God and that He has a holy calling for your life. I am not saying that you are called to pastor a church or be a missionary or travel in evangelism, God has a calling for you to holy. For you to live your life as close to His Word as possible. We have to realize that our life isn’t to be wasted on the doing what we want, but it needs to be used serving the Lord in every way we can.
Second technique in being profitable for God is you have to recognize what is holding you back and get rid of it. You will never be profitable for God as long as you have something holding you back in your walk, work, or worship for Him. In Hebrews 12:1, it tells us to “…lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us…” We can have a sin that is holding us back or we can have a weight that is holding us back. What is a weight in the spiritual life? It could be a hobby that keeps you out of serving in ministries, it could be work taking up to much of your time, it could be sports keeping you away from the church. All those things are not sin, but they are weights which are hindering you from serving God. If you can’t recognize that you either have a sin or a weight, you will not be able to be profitable for God.
The third and final technique I have today in being profitable for God is refuse to quit standing for right and refuse to quit serving the Lord. The devil will do anything he can to get you to stop serving, to get you to lower your standards, to get you to give up when it comes to standing for what is right and for the truth. We need more Christians like Paul who once he got saved, went full steam ahead for serving the Lord. You cannot and will not be profitable unto God when you stop serving and stop standing. You then decide your way is more important than His and there is no profit in that.
When we live a life that is profitable unto God, that is the wisest thing that you can do. God will then bring profit to you in by taking care of you and blessing you.
So no, this isn’t a way to profit financially in our careers, but it is a way to profit from the blessings of God by living a life that is profitable to Him.
