Choose You This Day – What Is The Choice?

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

This is a pretty popular verse in the Bible. There are two different sayings in this verse that are well known. The last being “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” There are plenty of inspirational signs that people have hanging up in there house with this saying. We even have one that my wife made that sits on top of one of our bookshelves.

The second saying from this verse is “choose you this day whom ye will serve.” I have plenty of messages and lessons on this topic and guess what, I have a blog about it today!

Joshua was standing before the children of Israel. He was telling them they had a choice to make that day. They had to choose between serving the true God or serving the gods from Egypt.

When I think of the definition of choice, I define it like this, the conscious decision of picking something between two or more options.

Everything we do in life is a choice. From the time we wake until the time we go to bed, we are making choices. We may not realize it or even think of it in this manner but every single thing we do is a direct result of a choice.

In the Christian life, we are faced with a choice every single day!

We have to choose between serving God or serving the world, the flesh and the devil. We have to choose between right and wrong.

Joshua presented the children of Israel with this choice and he told them they had to choose. What is this choice? I see three things about this choice that will apply to each one of us.

  1. It is an Individual Choice – Choosing between God and the gods of Egypt was an individual and personal choice for each person. Joshua said choose you! That you is singular, that you is individual! Joshua couldn’t make the choice for each person present that day, he could only make the choice for himself. We see his choice when he said, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Every morning when you wake up, you have to make a choice. You have to decide between serving God or the world, flesh and the devil that day. I can’t make that decision for you and you can’t make it for me. It is an individual choice!
  2. It is an Important Choice – This choice that we are talking about today is the single most important choice you will make every day. This choice will define your day and it will direct your future. There is nothing more important than choosing to serve God every single day. In my own personal life, my choices I make affect more than just me, they affect my wife and my daughters. Why wouldn’t I want to choose God every day.
  3. It is an Inescapable Choice – Joshua told them to choose this day! There is no escaping the choice that has to be made. You have to choose, you have to make a decision. You cannot wake up one morning and decide you aren’t going to make any choices that day, in doing so you just made a choice. It isn’t possible for someone else to make the choice of whom you will serve, it is your choice and you can’t escape it.

Choices are made every day. Some are big choices, some are little choices. Some are already predetermined based on our habits and lifestyle and others are conscious choices that we have to think about.

Serving God every day is a conscious choice. You have to decided to do it. We are sinful creatures by nature and left to ourselves we will naturally choose to do wrong. We have to make the decision of serving Christ every single day. And don’t just decide to do it, act upon it and fulfill that decision on a daily basis!

Who will you choose to serve today?

It is an INDIVIDUAL, an IMPORTANT, and an INESCAPABLE choice!

Choose you this day!
