Bible Reading Thoughts – Job’s Hedge

I started a chronological Bible reading plan this year and today, I started the book of Job. Job has always been an interesting character to look at because of His relationship with God and his trials with Satan.

In Job 1:1, we see the characteristic of Job. He was a perfect and upright man and one that feareth God.

In Job 1:6-12, we see the communication between the Lord and Satan. The Lord was asking Satan if he had ever considered tempting Job. Satan knew who Job was and the kind of man he was.

In Job 1:13-19, we see the catastrophic events that changed Job’s life forever. He lost his sons and daughters, he lost his livestock, he lost everything he had.

In Job 1:21-22, we see Job counting his blessings, knowing everything he had was from the Lord.

But in this whole chapter, the thing that stuck out the most to me is found in verse 10. It says, “Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.” That phrase, “Hast not thou made an hedge about him” made me start thinking about my own life. Do I have a hedge about me? Is God protecting me like He protected Job?

How to get that hedge of protection from God? The answer is simple. Live a perfect and upright life, fear God and eschew evil. Easier said than done, right? We should live in such a way that God wants to protect us from Satan. Walk with God, fellowship with God, have a relationship with God. Remember, Satan can only do what God allows him to do.

Realize that even if you are in the hedges, there will still be trials and tribulations in life. Job did everything he was supposed to do, yet God still allowed him to be persecuted. When we are persecuted, remember we still have blessings to be thankful of, no matter how few they seem.

So the thought for today is this, Do I have the hedges of God’s protection around me? Or, am I just in place where it is open season for Satan to attack me?

The best place to start getting those hedges of protection is walking with God. Read your Bible and pray every day. Fellowship with Him!
