Planted

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalms 1:3)

I was watching a FB reel of VicBlends. He’s a professional barber and he was talking to a young man and he said he was opening a barber shop. The young man asked what the name was going to be, Vic responded with “Planted Barber Shop.” The young man asked why did you choose that name. The answer, “Because being planted is what’s going to get you through every season in your life.”

As soon as he said that, my mind went to Psalms 1. I read this psalms not too long ago so it has been fresh in my mind. Verse three was actually one of the verses I have thought a lot about and could never really nail down a thought to write about until now.

If we are planted by the water of life, we will last through the seasons of life.

In my yard, I have some pecan trees. We had a tree guy come out and give us an estimate to trim the trees back from the house. During the conversation with him, he said that the pecan trees were two of the tallest pecan trees he has ever seen. I’m not a tree guy, but they are some pretty big trees, they provide shade for the house and they drop a lot of pecans. But the trees are definitely “planted.” They are healthy trees and I’m sure they have a massive root system.

The Bible is telling us that we need to be like a tree. The part of the trees we can see are the parts we enjoy. The shade, the fruit, the beauty of the trees, that’s all the good things we get from a tree but they can’t give any of that unless they are planted. We, as Christians, have to be planted. We have to have a good root system. We have to be getting water, we have to be getting nutrients and we have to be getting oxygen.

We cannot grow in Christ, unless we are properly planted in Christ. I’m reminded of Colossians 2:6-7 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” We are commanded to be rooted and built up in Christ.

We know we need to be planted in Christ. The question is how do we accomplish that.
